ArteFill® by SUNEVA Medical, Inc.

What is ArteFill?

Unlike other dermal fillers, ArteFill is the only FDA-approved filler that does not undergo absorption by your body and is considered a permanent injectable implant. ArteFill is composed of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres suspended in a solution of collagen. After injection the collagen carrier is degraded and replaced by the body's own collagen within 1-3 months. The microspheres and new collagen both contribute to the permanence of correction. Discomfort during injection is minimized as the formula also contains a local anesthetic, lidocaine. ArteFill not only corrects wrinkles but may also help prevent wrinkle development in the treated area.

How many treatments will I need?

As with other fillers, the volume of product and number of injection sessions is greatly determined by the depth of the wrinkle and the desired aesthetic result. In Dr. O'Connell's experience two to three sessions are required.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a natural component of skin and connective tissue. Because ArteFill contains bovine collagen, a skin test is required prior to treatment to test for allergy. Injectable collagen has been marketed under the Zyderm and Zyplast names since the 1980's but is not currently utilized at Plastic Surgery of Southern CT.

How long will the results last?

ArteFill is intended as a permanent filler and this claim is supported by data extending for five or more years.
