Juvederm™, Juvederm Ultra, and Juvederm Ultra Plus by Allergan

What is Juvederm?

Like Restylane and Perlane, the Juvederm products are NASHA injectable gels made of hylaronic acid. The Juvederm products, which are manufactured by Allergan, are safe and effective fillers used to smooth out wrinkles and folds in the face. These FDA-approved fillers are part of a growing non-surgical trend in the United States. Like our other hyaluronic acid based products treatment with Juvederm is quick and easy, with minimal recovery and downtime. Dr. O'Connell believes that Juvederm has a smoother consistency than Restylane and because it is more highly cross-linked, it persists for approximately nine months to beyond one year. Juvederm sometimes is spelled incorrectly as Juvaderm.

Where are the Juverderm products injected?

The areas most commonly treated with Juvederm at Plastic Surgery of Southern Connecticut are the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, cheek rhytids and lips. Dr. O'Connell's choice of hyaluronic acid based filler (Juverderm vs. Restylane/Perlane) depends upon depth of the line, prior treatments and desired longevity of correction.

What are Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus?

Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are the two Juvederm formulations used at Plastic Surgery of Southern CT. Both products are FDA-approved for injection into the mid to deep dermis to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Compared to Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more highly cross-linked, more robust formulation intended to correct deeper wrinkles and folds. Dr. O'Connell often injects Juvederm products on top of the firmer gel of Restyane so that the latter product may serve as a structural foundation for the Juvederm.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body. Hyaluronic acid acts to cushion and lubricate connective tissue and it is a structural component of the skin. On rare occasions, patients who have a history of allergic reactions to gram-positive bacterial proteins or a history of several severe allergies may experience the same reaction to hyaluronic acid. Please be sure to full disclose and discuss your medical history with Dr. O'Connell to ensure your safety.

How many injections will I need?

The number of syringes required depends upon the severity of the wrinkles and folds being treated and the extent of the correction desired. Dr. O'Connell typically injects Juvaderm products in .8 mL syringes and he strives to optimize correction in the most cost-effective way possible.

How long will the results last?

Dr. O'Connell believes that because Juvederm is more highly cross-linked than Restylane it persists for approximately nine months to beyond one year. A multicenter, randomized study in the January / February 2008 issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal showed that Juvederm Ultra lasted more than 9 months and Juvederm Ultra Plus for persisted year or more. Dr. O'Connell and his staff will help you schedule follow-up treatments to maintain your correction in the most cost-effective way.
