Sculptra™ (poly-L-lactic-acid) by Sanofi Aventis

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved product made from poly-L-lactic acid micropheres. Sculptra produces long-term tissue filling through collagen ingrowth into the areas of accumulated particles as the poly-L-lactic acid microspheres dissolve. Sculptra was approved by the FDA in 2004 for use in soft tissue filling into areas of lipoatrophy in the cheeks and temples caused by antiretroviral medications taken by HIV patients. Unlike other dermal fillers that are used predominantly to correct discrete lines or wrinkles, Sculptra results in gradual expansion over time in areas of facial volume loss. Unlike other fillers, Sculptra is injected just below the skin and the results are not instantaneous but appear gradually over time.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically three sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are required for optimal correction. It is believed that the appearance following the first injection session will simulate the final result after collagen ingrowth.

How long will the results last?

In a Sculptra clinical study, most patients experienced results lasted up to 2 years. As always, the exact location of the treated area will effect how long the results may last. It is believed that collagen ingrowth starts in the first month and patients will look their best approximately 10 months after the first Sculptra session.
