Bellafill®

Home|Injectables|Bellafill®

Bellafill® by Suneva®  Medical is a permanent injectable filler composed of 80% collagen gel and 20% PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) microspheres.  The collagen gel provides immediate volumization and the PMMA microspheres form a scaffold to support endogenous collagen production and tissue matrix formation.  Bellafill® also contains 0.3% lidocaine. Because the collagen gel is of bovine origin, in the U.S., a skin test is required to identify patients who may be allergic to this gel or the lidocaine.

Bellafill® has FDA approval for the correction of nasolabial folds as well as moderate to severe, atrophic, distensible facial acne scars on the cheek in patients over the age of 21.

How Long does Bellafill® Last?

According to the manufacturer, “the effectiveness and patient satisfaction rates of Bellafill®  have been established through 5 years when used to correct nasolabial folds, and 12 months when used to correct acne scars.” A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology is referenced by the manufacturer with regard to the treatment of facial acne scars.

Some plastic surgeons believe that the PMMA is permanent.

How does Bellafill® Work?

Bellafill’s mechanism of action is two-fold.  First the collagen gel provides immediate volume to wrinkles and scars, just like many other fillers.   The manufacturer states that the PMMA microspheres which remain in place, provide a “scaffold” that supports the ingrowth of collagen and “tissue matrix formation.”
